The HiPER Project

The Preparatory Phase of HiPER officially started on 28th April 2008 and will last for 3 years.

The aim of the preparatory phase is to address the financial, legal, governance, and strategic issues, in parallel with a full technical risk reduction programme, to enable the project to proceed towards the construction phase.

The key objectives of the preparatory phase are

  • Prepare the legal, financial and governance framework for HiPER construction, operation and decommissioning, to allow rapid transition at the end of the preparatory phase
  • Ensure HiPER integrates fully and effectively into the European and International science facility landscape, realising its potential to provide clear leadership in this field as the first truly international high energy laser facility
  • Coordinate the international laser fusion community to ensure Europe takes a leading role through the construction of a facility optimised for long term energy and world-leading science missions.
