Why Fusion?

Fusion is widely researched because it is a clean and efficient way of producing energy. Fossil fuels are set to be in short supply in the future and with the world’s energy needs increasing rapidly, an alternative method of producing energy on a large scale is needed.

There are several reasons why fusion is desirable:

  • It produces no CO2 during the process and so will not contribute to the current levels in the atmosphere. It is this gas that is largely credited for global warming.
  • It produces no long lived radioactive waste that could contaminate the environment.
  • The fuels required are found in abundance in seawater and the Earth’s crust.
  • Fusion does not rely on a large fuel mass, unlike fission, and so ‘melt down’ is not possible. The worst that can happen is that you get no energy output!
